Virginia City

Like any good Nevadans, we took a trip to rustic Virginia City this Memorial weekend. The party included myself, Steph, her cousin Taylor, Shawn and Eddie. We didn’t do any of the things that you’re actually supposed to do there (like go to the mines or something). We pretty much just ducked out of the bad weather into the stores they have there. Mostly the same stuff in all of the stores – cowboy hats, John Wayne memorabilia, gold flakes and racist trinkets from a forgotten time. Also, lots of sweets – Taylor basically ate her weight in saltwater taffy.

We saw lots of folks dressed in clothing from the 1800s, which we affectionately coined “Old-Timeys,” which we believed was a definite upgrade from the alternative, “Period People.”

We were so inspired by their fashion, that we decided to take an old-timey photo.

We also discovered that virtually ALL things in history occurred in Virginia City. Did you know that? Yup, the Declaration of Independence was apparently signed in Virginia City. The Internet was invented in Virginia City. The automobile was invented in Virginia City. The first baby (ever) was born in Virginia City. The Lost City of Atlantis stood where “modern day” Virginia City now stands. The Battle of Gettysburg – you got it – occurred in Virgina City. Pretty impressive stuff.

Make sure you visit soon. It was quite an experience to be whisked back in time and live like an old-timey coal miner for a day.
